Nearly all of my pieces are created primarily from metal clay. Originating in Japan in 1990, metal clay is a clay-like art medium consisting of very small particles of metals (such as sterling, fine silver, bronze, copper, and gold) mixed with an organic binder and water. Metal clay can be shaped just like any soft clay, then dried and fired in a kiln. During firing, the binder burns away, leaving the pure, sintered metal. Shrinkage between 8% and 25% occurs (depending on product used) in this stage, and can be exploited to produce very fine detail. After firing, the piece can be tumbled, pierced, sawn, soldered, and finished the same way sheet metal and wire is.
